If a mechanic says that a car repair is going to cost more than I expected, should I go to another garage for a second opinion?

It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion if you don’t feel certain that a repair estimate is fair or competitive. Of course, getting a second opinion will take additional time and money. If the original estimate was unreasonable, however, you could save hundreds of dollars.

Keep in mind that you don’t always have to actually take the car to another shop to get a second opinion. Depending on the recommended repair, you may be able to get an accurate estimate over the telephone. In order to do this you’ll need to have specific and accurate information, including the year, make, model, engine size, and possibly the vehicle identification number (VIN) of your vehicle. You’ll also need to be clear about the problem or symptom, the recommended repair, and exactly what is included in the original estimate. Without these critical pieces of information, it’ll be tough to compare apples to apples. Be sure to write down everything and ask lots of questions.
